ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture literally means "needle piercing," the practice of inserting very fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific anatomic points in the body (called acupuncture points) for therapeutic purposes to balance the movement of energy in the body and to restore appropriate balance thereby enhancing health.

The system of acupuncture points form the meridians, or channels, that can be visualized as a matrix that passes through the body connecting all of its parts and serving as a conduit for energy to move and flow throughout the body.

The acupuncture points are the locations where the Qi/energy of the channels rises close to the surface of the body. When energy flows freely through the meridians, the body is balanced and healthy; but if the energy becomes blocked, stagnated, or weakened, it can result in physical, mental, or emotional ill health.

To restore the balance, the acupuncturist stimulates the acupuncture points to bring the body back to balance. In this way, acupuncture can effectively re-balance the energy system and restore health or prevent the development of disease. The points that the practitioner chooses to stimulate may not necessarily be at the site of the symptoms.

Oriental medicine, including Acupuncture and Chinese herbs, have a cumulative effect and seem to progressively work at various levels in the body. Acupuncture may initially treat superficial functional levels of the body; whereas long-term treatments work at a deeper organic level and treat not only symptoms but also the source of illnesses.
